If the disk is virtualized, by all means create a new container. If creating a new container, one cam do the BACKUP/IMAGE disk-to-disk. Caution, if the two containers are on the same PHYSICAL disk, performance will be poor. eSATA works well, USB not so much.

It goes without saying that one should protect the original virtual disk against deletion.
