Thanks for the peek under the hood regarding indexed files. I thought of this
problem since it seemed somewhat like a persistant "mailbox" which could 
survive reboots/crashes while data was in the pipe.  Sometimes old vexing
problems which "seem" simple at first glance continue to occupy space in my 
mind.
