Well Bob, if you read as much as you write, you'd already know the
answer to that question.
VSI has mentioned, many times, that their goal is to support usage with
and without VMs. With, because so many customers are asking for it.
Without because of tradition, or whatever.
Consider, a VM allows one to have the effect of custom hardware, without
actually having said hardware. This can be very flexible. For one
thing, it makes their porting to x86 much easier, and less costly. They
do not have to have any specific hardware. Also consider that by the
time the port is ready for prime time, any hardware they ported to will
already be obsolete.
VSI has mentioned that some hardware will be supported. Not all, or
even most, because types of hardware have exploded into so many
varieties. It is no longer the 1980s where just a few types of hardware
existed.
But the biggest reason VMs will be supported is, because the customers
have asked for just that. And you know, the customer is always right.
