The clinical lab world leverages M for its plasticity when connecting to lab data acquisition devices. Perhaps that's how it's used at the VA? The language's stem and leaf capability (see too, REXX) coupled with lightning-fast reflexes make it a surprisingly useful tool at a large California healthcare provider .
That it is a write-only language deterred said provider from out-sourcing their lab support IT staff (24x7!) to Tata in 2012.
