Apple macOS, Apple iOS, Microsoft Windows, Linux, etc.

Apple went with the longer-term approach and went with flat, and forced 
third-party macOS and iOS developers to move their apps to 64-bit.

Apple used the migration to fix a pile of problems and limits latent in 
the 32-bit APIs, too.

The macOS 10.15 release finished the ~decade-long migration to 64-bit, too.
