There are many such cases.  I am working on one now that uses Westinghouse WDPF which is a factory data highway system.  The VAX machines use a special hardware interface called VXI connected to the Unibus adapter.

The VAX based system is being replaced by a series of PLCs.  Not a simple project.  The cost of this will exceed $1,000,000 in hardware and software by the time it is complete.
