[Info-vax] PCSI

Have I mentioned recently that I increasingly dislike PCSI?

No?

It's mostly good for what VSI does with OpenVMS and the VSI LP kits,
but it's really rather inflexible as installation tools go.

Each of us has to automate the building and kit-versioning and kit
version display and related baggage when using PCSI, too.

The implementation of product prerequisites has caused VSI and other
folks problems, too.

There's no grab-all-those-files-and-put-them-here mechanism; no
wildcards. Each file and each directory has to be specified.

There are other bits of app install and system-configuration baggage
lurking too, not the least of which is the lack of bundling support for
apps, and the lack of profile support.

What coordination is available is largely if not entirely by
convention, and far too fond of everything intermingled.

Rollbacks and patches and database corruptions, too—but then I've
grumbled about the "fun" involved with products rolling their own
transactional databases before.
