And that is why David's analogy is _so_ wrong.
A closer comparison would be this:
Someone owns a set of master molds that they have used to produce products
for sale. One day they decide not to continue investing in the raw materials
to make copies of the products from the molds because they are no longer
making enough money to justify the continued production of these products.
However, some people think that they can now copy or borrow the molds
(without the owner's permission) for their own purposes so they can
continue making products from the molds for free.
The owner still owns the molds and no-one is allowed to take (or even
borrow) the molds without the owner's permission as that is against
the law.
HPE are not discarding anything. They still own the master molds (ie: VMS)
and you can't make copies of these molds without the permission of HPE.
