you can find a code example (routine checksum_bck in module DUMP.C) in the freeware tool DISKBLOCK, which I'm continuing to maintain:

The current version DISKBLOCK063 can be found on EISNER/DECUServe

The source modules are in saveset DISKBLOCK063.E

Note that the DISKBLOCK tool can dump and search for BACKUP block headers since V6.2 (using DISKBLOCK> SEARCH/BCK and DUMP/BCK).
