V9 added support for smallish blocksize savesets. After a lot of feedback (loud squealing noises) from the field, this was increased to support larger sizes late in the game (via unnatural acts with supervisor mode, IIRC). RSX took a look at it for possible inclusion, looked at the code and ran away screaming.
