CMS existed and was part of the suite back in the late 1980's. I don't
know about earlier - I started with VMS around 1986.
CMS is pretty solid, but feature wise it is obsolete today.
Many projects outside of VMS went:
RCS--(25 years ago)-->CVS--(15 years ago)-->SVN--(5 years ago)-->Git
I believe CMS is slightly better than RCS, slightly behind CVS and
way behind SVN and Git.
If you have a working CMS environment then You are OK for now.
But for long term strategy you should start planning to
migrate.
