Certainly tools like git, Subversion, etc. have their places. They do have many advantages over CMS. They can version an entire "tree" while CMS is flat and has versions on a per-module basis. Of course, existing VMS customers have learned to deal with that model.

Converting anything from one source code tool to another is a large operation if you which to keep history, branches/variants, etc. As an example, LLVM has recently moved from using Subversion to git for their source code management. It took over a year to get that finished.

As Arne, Rob, et al have said, CMS is quite stable and will be supported for as long as VMS and VSI exists. All of our source code is in CMS libraries.

And VMS git or Subversion clients are all works-in-progress without any official support.
