On VMS, I can abbreviate commands and qualifiers if they are unique, so 
in that sense there is less need for it.  But it would be nice since I 
can get a list if it is not unique, and also expansion for file names.  
Of course, in things like CD.COM I allow for (all sorts of) 
abbreviations, but it would be nice to have it generally.

Right.

Also the ability to send an interative process to the background is 
nice.  A workaround on VMS is to start with a subprocess then attach to 
the main process and so on, but that is not as nice.
