Tab would be incompatible with filename completion in this case as you
might want to press Tab to get a list of all the files in the current
directory before you have typed any part of the filename.
I find that quite useful in Bash at times.
Escape or a function key (including maybe one of the PF keys) might be
a possibility if you don't want to type Ctrl-{something} (but you would
have to wait a full second for the Escape to timeout if you used that).
