   There wasn't until fairly recently, but it's a feature with
increasing interest/popularity:

   Exactly how it ought to be done is not obvious to me.  Certainly,
processing the compressed data more than once is not the way.  I haven't
looked lately at the APPNOTE to see if there's already a suitable spec.

   I believe that bzip2 is currently supported as a build-time option.  
A couple others have gotten some work, but they've been stuck in the
pipeline for a while.  The usual chicken-egg problem prevails.
