That's the direction I would go.  You might end up with the entire gcc toolchain.  There have been reports with VMS support going away so it might have to come back.  There have been mentions of rehosting GNAT to LLVM.  And there was a gcc-compatibility layer for LLVM called DragonEgg in the past.  It has been removed from the current source tree due to lack of support (doesn't mean it couldn't be brought back to life).
