Me? I still use rn without threading. But there are many dozens of

Personally, I spend $10/month for a shell account at Panix. It gives me
email and news from a shell prompt on a machine running NetBSD, as well
as some minimal web hosting and storage. I wouldn't recommend doing that
if you just want news service, I'd just get an account with an nntp service
like eternal-september and run your newsreader locally.
Anything is better than google groups.
