This is getting confusing.

I'm pretty sure that 8.4-2L1 will run on older Alphas; at least on
XP1000s, but there is no obvious reason why it shouldn't run on older
hardware. 

8.4-2L2 will run only on EV6 or better.

To cluster Alpha with x86, 8.4-2Lx requires a patch, but x could be 1 or 
2.
