Never seen a total head crash on a HDD?  Ok, neither have I, but I have 
seen HDDs fail, and once they start, you cannot count on getting 
accurate data off them.

Oh, and welcome to the new world of cheap and semi-reliable PC junk 
hardware ....

You must be talking about older not so cheap and usually fully debugged 
( well, sorta ) disk drives ....

SSDs are all that I'll acquire now, but, I still run disk drives that I 
have.  Haven't lost a SSD, yet ...  Don't jinx me ...
