Yes, I have actually (back as a student). Saw what happens when a
head decides to make contact with a platter on a removable disk pack. :-)

In modern times, yes I have had multiple HDDs fail but the usual levels
of redundancy have saved me so far. You cannot count on that with SSDs
however. Here's a couple of examples from your favourite vendor:

Imagine if your VMS cluster had those (and only those) installed as
part of a HBVS setup and then you walked in the next day and found that
every single drive, including all cluster-wide redundant backups, had all
failed at pretty much the same time and that you couldn't recover the data.

Like I said, SSDs make me nervous.
