The port was from BSD via DIGITAL Unix / Tru64 Unix / DEC OSF/1 —
ULTRIX was deprecated by then — as maintaining one then-newer IP stack
was then preferable to then-maintaining two diverging stacks.
There were both porting-related changes, and some changes to the
OpenVMS kernel to allow easier re-porting. Centrally some updates to
buffer memory management support, IIRC.
As for looking forward and not backward, I'm not expecting to see
OpenFastPath (OFP) on OpenVMS, or ilk. Nor IP stack integration nor
kernel TLS/DTLS within the next five years, either. ToE support...
maybe.
But the whole discussion feels like premature optimization for an app
that doesn't yet exist, likely won't, and that is going to be expensive
to create and host on OpenVMS. And that'll be a high-profile target. Or
apps and hosting for others worried about getting de-hosted, a fear of
consequences for one's own activities which seems a fairly remarkable
realization and concern for some folks here in the US. Not so much for
other folks here in the US, of course. But I digress. For those
concerned about being de-hosted from AWS, don't do what is alleged in
the AWS filings or ilk, and you're not going to get tossed off AWS.

Links to some of what allegedly happened here are in the linked
filings available via Ars. As for Dominion-related activities mentioned
earlier in the thread, here's a bunch of folks that have announced that
they lied about Dominion voting systems:

Brandolini's Law is on full display around here, of course.
