And the MOP protocol is patented... but the patent does not provide sufficient
information to implement a client.  Some people making third party terminal
servers have licensed the patent but it is far from open when compared to
decnet.

Whereas in the IP world, everything is IP, in the DEC world you may have
Decnet, Vaxcluster, and MOP packets all running on the same cable, with
totally different formats.  Everything from the data link layer on up is
different, but a lot of people don't seem to recognize that and go poking
at Decnet when they have clustering issues, etc.
