I almost remember the time before ...
When there were .COM, but it wasn't allowed for messages
(e-mail, ftp, telnet, anything) between two .COM sites.
Government and academic users were allowed to connect to them.
And also, much of the long distance lines were on 56K bit/s leased lines.
And yes, with Al Gore in the lead, the Internet as we know it, starting with
much government funding, and later more commercial networks forming.
