Have you used Ghostscript on VMS ?
[Disclaimer: I do not know the current situation with Ghostscript on VMS.]
If it's not too much effort, it might be worth trying to use Ghostscript
to convert the PDF into something the printer could understand and see
what the results are like.
In addition, you could try using the Ghostscript pdf2ps utility to
convert your PDF document to Postscript. Some Linux documentation
