You can lose tabs that way (they can get converted to spaces depending
on the emulator) but apart from that, it's a standard approach. You can
also easily cross-paste between multiple different operating systems
in that way.

Besides, when the target window is running Emacs, it has the tabify
command to restore them back, which works just fine for me.

No it is not enough today and it has not been for a long time.
