For me, when moving content between nodes, I copy and paste small sections
of code or program output and I copy large programs or large amounts of
program output as files to the target node.

There was (is?) a VMS layered product that allows you to run multiple
sessions over one serial port to a VT terminal. I can't remember what
it was called or what it was capable of doing. For example, I don't know
if it had the capabilities of the Linux screen utility. I also don't know
if it's going to be available for x86-64 VMS.
However, if you are using a "proper" editor (such as EVE or emacs),
you can have multiple edit buffers on the screen at the same time.
