A nested associative array is an associative array that is in a data
element of another associative array. In other words, the second
associative array is nested inside the first associative array.

You could extend this to have multiple layers of nested associative
arrays.

In some cases, using nested associative arrays _is_ simpler and easier
to process than the alternative approaches if the language supports
the construct.
