I never considered this.  I guess it makes sense, since RMS knows about the records in
a file, so locking the first byte would (inside RMS) then lock the entire record.

Even today I learn something I didn't previously know.

My DAS database locks blocks, by using the block number, so I guess it's the same thing.
Just never looked at how RMS does locking.
