None.  It just hung.  My best guess is the host was waiting for a reply

No idea.

FTDRIVER is a pseudo-terminal driver.  There is also something called a
virtual terminal (VTDRIVER?) but I've never used it and couldn't find
much in the way of documentation just now.

As Hoff said else-thread:

"It'd be interesting to see if ssh could be adapted to permit VT virtual
terminal support, too."
