I used to laugh at the 8086/80286 segmentation system, while I basked in programming in the large, linear address space on 680x0-based Apple Macs. I didn’t laugh quite as much as Motorola’s CPU market share shrank and x86 became more and more popular, but there you go.

These days, I understand AMD64 is quite reasonably designed, with a useful number of registers.

But then again, with Open Source, the exact architecture doesn’t matter as much. It’s easier to port such code across different instruction sets, while the proprietary vendors have a hard time.
