I'm mildly surprised that this ssh client even connects to anything, 
without also having the other end de-tuned.

What to do here? Use telnet. It's not like security is a central 
consideration here, to be blunt. Get it working, move on to the next 
issue.

Or petition local management to fund an upgrade to V8.4-2L1 or maybe 
V8.4-2L2, which'll bring this configuration forward twenty years, of 
course.
