It could be useful occasionally.

But I suspect that it could be some work for VSI to have DIRECTORY
read all and sort instead of just processing one by one.

I would call it a "nice to have" feature not a "must have" feature.

If you are scripting then just use something else than DCL
that can do what you want.

Python is a rather obvious choice for something like that.
