See my reply on this. The "more modern" approach would take us back to PDP 11 days of FLD$() because the entire record past the end of the primary key would have to be a BLOB to implement multi-typed records. It would be viciously inefficient.

All you need is RMS indexed files to have usable file sizes and limits. Something like 36TB would be nice for starters.
