That was a real question not all that long ago, when DEC was in trouble.  If IBM had gotten G. Q. Bob instead of DEC, IBM might have been the one to go under.

Primary vendor going bust is a real thing for audits and BRP. You have to have all source code and a complete build environment that has been tested to actually build archived at an escrow site.
