Re VMWare there is a big difference between VMWare player
(VM's running on Linux or Windows) and VMWare ESXi that runs
on metal.

I would expect development to use Player and
production to use ESXi.

ESXi can be a bit picky about the hardware. But that is
somewhat to be expected from "metal" and "production".
