Most likely this machine had a valid license.  It might not be
so obvious which version, though.

In the case of emulators, it is not so likely that they ever had
a licensed version.

I wonder how many people have the license for the software
in their TV remote control.  Wouldn't want to use one without
the license in hand.  (Presumably the one not holding the remote.)
