Most obscure would probably be using the control signals on a _real_
serial port, not USB serial port, as GPIO pins.

Abusing a parallel port would also do it, but that's not as obscure
as using the control signals on a serial port.

There are designs for building low-cost microcontroller programmers
that work with control signals on real serial ports on PCs running
Linux. Just be aware of potential voltage compatibility issues with
current microcontrollers before trying the designs however.
