OpenVMS supports this feature via the SET FILE/ALIAS command.

I'm sure the SET FILE /ALIAS=GENERATE=UUID {ODS-5 path} command can be added.

Then you can enter the generated UUID into the image file path argument.

We can undoubtedly work logical names into this, but you'll have to 
re-enter the logical name at boot.
