If it was truly portable, it wouldn't need "#ifdef <some arch> #endif"s.

I work on VMS so I have no need to have things work on zOS or *ix or M$DOS
or WEENDOZE.  If only Apple could have figured out a way to have old 32 bit
apps run on their latest OSX.  Maybe you should go proselytize to the Apple
fanbois about portability.
