IBM made a few attempts to use ASCII on those machines, with one model 
(I want to say the 360/44) having a bunch of ASCII support instructions.
Never seemed to come to much.  A number of manufacturers made 
sort-of-compatible machines (like the RCA Spectra/70) that used the /360
instruction set but with ASCII so you couldn't really run /360 code on
them.

So I am pleased that IBM has made another attempt at ASCII on that 
architecture.
