MariaDB 5.5 is from 2012 and went EOL in 2020.
Old indeed in general IT. Not quite as old in the VMS world.
And I think it is quite OK functionality wise.
The only think that comes to my mind as missing is the
JSON support in newer versions.

That explains why they have not been ported yet.

I don't think anyone will miss traditional VMS C++.
It is so far behind.
