"series of opaque bytes" is how ISAM files and NoSQL key value
stores work everywhere: you got key (or keys) and a data BLOB.

And all records do not need to have the same structure, so it is
not possible to define the structure.

Of course one can decide to have same structure for all records
and document the structure in the database.

DEC actually did that. And called it Rdb. :-)
