A very large number stay on Cobol on mainframe.
Some number migrate to C++ or Java or whatever on Linux.
But some migrate to Cobol on Linux or Windows.
There are some companies that specializes in the latter.
Microfocus (now owned by OpenText) is the most well known. But
there are other like Heirloom.
That approach reduces migration cost and risk tremendously. And
still achieve massive hardware cost reduction.
But it does obviously not fix the software architecture. The
Cobol code does not change behavior just because it runs
on Linux or Windows.
I am considering it sort of a half solution.
But Microfocus is making good money on it. They have acquired
a ton of other software over the years so their revenue is a lot
more than Cobol, but it seems likely that they sell for 0.5-1.0 B$
Cobol software and services.
