I'm not sure what you're looking at.  I'm seeing, and replying to, an 
article posted to the comp.os.vms newsgroup on Usenet.  That's not a 
mailing list.

Yep.

I've resorted to filtering Google Groups from my personal / private news 
server.

That looks like a mailing list.

Do you by chance have the comp.os.vms Usenet newsgroup being gatewayed 
to a private mailing list?

If you truly are working with a mailing list, I might suggest 
configuring it to moderate all non-subscribers.

But you are likely going to run into problems with both legitimate 
messages posted to comp.os.vms from Usenet as well as ne'erdowell(s) 
that are sparying many Usenet newsgroups with spam.
