Centralized versus distributed design philosophy? Seems to be reflected in
the fact that the BSDs have been quite slow to adopt distributed version
control systems like Git. Even before that, it took them ages just to go
from CVS to SVN.

I would say, one is more adaptable to a changing world than the other.
