A cute anecdote.
I have never considered my French to be beyond the conversational.
About 25 years ago I made a trip to France for the Chartres Pilgrimage.
I found my self frequently translating for English speakers at
souvenir stands but the biggest kick was when one of the people who
ran the facility we stayed at prior to our departure for Chartres told
me my French was better than the Canadians I was traveling with.  :-)

Sadly, I don't get to use any of my languages other than English and I
fear the ability is declining even faster than my memory.
