Example: the 7th Edition added a prohibition on using the source code for 
teaching purposes. Which is why the Lions Book had to be officially 
withdrawn (though it continued to circulate via samizdat).

I think this just shows, Unix got popular in spite of its corporate 
owners, rather than because of them.

So you see, it wasn’t just AT&T that had no clue what to do with Unix.

I’m not sure there is anything left worth resurrecting. Certainly not RMS, 
for a start. DCL? No way. Async QIO? Linux has liburing for that, now.
