That was never a question within HP. They'd nailed their colours to IA-64,
and had shipped the first HP-UX that ran on it, 11i v1.5, before the
merger. Dropping that and re-starting porting work, causing a delay of at
least a year, would have needed an extraordinary justification.

Not for long. Its end of life is 31st December 2025. Live by IA-64, die
by IA-64.
