When installing a Linux system, don't install everything. Use the installer
to select the categories you wish to install instead.
As for the kernel, Linux, unlike VMS, has a flexible and functioning kernel
modules system. Hopefully, at least some of that extra functionality will
be in kernel modules that are never installed if you don't select those
packages during installation.
