However, they aren't going to do that, are they? 

Going that way would need to have been started much earlier, at the start
of the x86-64 port. It would have required doing something that was a
*much* better version of the Sector 7 product, and avoiding the existing
VMS customers losing confidence in VSI. That's two quite hard things, and
starting on them now makes less sense than carrying on with the current
strategy, for good or ill.
